Methodology

“Capital expenditures” is each company’s as-reported payments to acquire property, plant and equipment from the quarterly cash-flow statement (SEC EDGAR / XBRL) — we do not estimate, adjust, or attribute spending to any purpose. Quarters are aligned by the calendar quarter each fiscal period ends in; Microsoft’s fiscal year ends in June, so its March quarter is fiscal Q3. Trailing-12-month figures sum each company’s own latest four reported quarters. New quarters appear as 10-Q/10-K filings are processed. Missing cells mean the figure was not yet reported or not tagged in the filing.
